چکیده

The cotton (Gossypium herbaceum L.) was analyzed for changes in physiological and morphological parameters under the influence of water stress. The deleterious effect of water stress i.e., drought in cotton plants was mainly targeted towards physiological and morphological characteristics. The gas-exchange parameters of net photosynthesis (P N ), stomatal conductance (g s ), electron transport rates (ETR), sub-stomatal CO 2 concentration (C i ) and the maximum quantum efficiency of PS II (F v /F m ) showed a decreasing trend as the drought intensity increased. But considerable increase in osmotic potential (Ψ) was reported. The growth parameter viz., shoot length, root length, leaf area expansion and leaf number showed significant decrease on increase in drought intensity. But the comparative analysis revealed that G. herbaceum is torerance towards drought.

Independent Domestication of Two Old World Cotton Species

Domesticated cotton species provide raw material for the majority of the world's textile industry. Two independent domestication events have been identified in allopolyploid cotton, one in Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and the other to Egyptian cotton (Gossypium barbadense L.). However, two diploid cotton species, Gossypium arboreum L. and Gossypium herbaceum L., have been cultivated fo...

A New Sythetic Hybrid (A1D5) between Gossypium herbaceum and G. raimondii and Its Morphological, Cytogenetic, Molecular Characterization

The diploid species G. herbaceum (A1) and G. raimondii (D5) are the progenitors of allotetraploid cotton, respectively. However, hybrids between G. herbaceum and G. raimondii haven't been reported. In the present study, hybridization between G. herbaceum and G. raimondii was explored. Morphological, cytogenetic and molecular analyses were used to assess the hybridity. The interspecific hybrid p...

Assessment of Gene Flow Between Gossypium hirsutum and G. herbaceum: Evidence of Unreduced Gametes in the Diploid Progenitor

In the framework of a gene flow assessment, we investigated the natural hybridization rate between Gossypium hirsutum (AADD genome) and G. herbaceum (AA genome). The latter species, a diploid progenitor of G. hirsutum, is spontaneously present in South Africa. Reciprocal crosses were performed without emasculation between G. herbaceum and G. hirsutum Neither examination of the morphological cha...

Lint yield and seed quality response of drip irrigated cotton under various levels of water

Restricted water resources are a limiting factor for irrigation applications throughout the world. The effects of irrigation regimes (amount) on cotton lint yield are known, but there is little information on the effect of irrigation regimes on seed quality of cotton. In this study, the effects of deficit irrigation after the onset of flowering on lint yield and seed quality of cotton (Gossypiu...

Physiological and morphological responses of rice (Oryza sativa L.) to varying water stress management strategies

Sustainability of rice production under limited water conditions is threatened by increasing irrigation water scarcity. Therefore, physiological and morphological responses of rice to varying water stress management strategies should be determined. The physiological and morphological responses of a semi dwarf rice (Hashemi cultivar) to water stress intensities (mild and severe, i.e., short-dura...
